Why Deep Clean Your Carpets?

You should take the time to deep clean your carpets every once in a while instead of only vacuuming them every now and then.

Here we will teach you how to deep clean your carpet at home so that you can maintain the appearance and function of your floors for as long as possible.

In order to prevent the build-up of dirt, debris, bacteria, and other harmful substances in your carpet, you should vacuum and clean them regularly. There are times, however, when vacuuming is not enough to keep carpets clean. Deep cleaning carpets takes keeping your carpets completely clean to a whole new level.

A deep clean is crucial as it washes the carpet fibres and removes the dirt and bacteria that are deep inside the carpet, beyond the top layer you see most of while also helping to get rid of difficult to remove stains. As a result, deep cleaning carpets makes them last longer, give them a second lease of life, and make them look that much better for the run of their lifespan.

How Often Should I Deep Clean A Carpet?

The frequency with which you should deep clean your carpets should be determined by the amount of traffic it deals with along with considering what the room is used for.

For the average room this means deep cleaning twice a year and hoovering on a weekly basis. This changes if you have pets, messy kids, or smokers, though. In these scenarios you should deep clean your carpets every three months, or four times a year.

If we’ve learned anything from our Healthy Flooring Options post, it’s that you should also be cleaning your filter fortnightly, or replacing it entirely every 3 months to keep your vacuum operating at its best!

Deep cleaning carpets is a fairly time consuming activity that can take from half an hour to several hours. This is part of why deep cleaning a carpet on a weekly or even monthly basis isn’t advised. Most of us just don’t have the time for that!

Though this process may sound daunting, it’s actually a simple activity that you don’t need any fancy machines for, although if you wanted to hire and use a carpet cleaner every so often that’s not a bad idea either. There are several ways to go about this deep cleaning so we’ll explore a few of the options below.

Here’s a list of the things you could possibly need:

    • Vacuum
    • Spray bottle
    • Bucket
    • Cloth or towel
    • Scrub brush or sponge
    • Distilled white vinegar
    • Baking soda
    • Table salt
    • Spot cleaning solution or shaving cream
    • Commercial carpet cleaning powder/solution or carpet shampoo

Before You Deep Clean Your Carpets...

Before undertaking the task of the deep clean, there are some preparatory steps you should take.

Prepare The Room For Cleaning

The first thing that needs to be done is to clear the room completely. Keep toys, books, and other items that are lying around off the ground by putting them away. If there is any furniture in the way, make sure to move it out of the way as well.

Vacuum Your Carpet First

As you would any other week, you should hoover the carpet to remove as much dust and dirt as possible. If you do this first it means that you’re only having to clean the carpet in ways that normally wouldn’t get done. Hoovering first will ensure your carpet is even cleaner by the end of the process.

Pre-treat Carpet Stains

Whenever you have stains on your carpet, it is best if you pre-treat them in attempts to remove them before you undertake a deep cleaning of your carpet. This will help to prevent the stains from coming back. The most effective way to do this is to use a carpet cleaning solution or a stain remover solution for this step. This will usually come with instructions on the box for you to follow. If you do not have a stain remover, you can use shaving cream. Spray the shaving cream on the stain and leave it to sink in for 30 minutes. After waiting, blot it away with a cloth, then spray it with vinegar and wipe any remaining residue.

Deep Cleaning By Hand

There are times when you don’t want to rely on a cleaning machine or vacuum cleaner to take care of all your cleaning needs. It is possible to take the old school approach and deep clean your carpet by hand.

The benefit of this is that you can really see the changes you’re making and be sure the carpet is cleaned to your personal standards. In addition, hand cleaning is especially useful when you are deep cleaning only a small part of a larger carpet.

Here are some step-by-step instructions that will guide you through the process.

Firstly, mix a 1/8 teaspoon of soap with water in a spray bottle and spray it on the area you’re cleaning. Sprinkle baking soda and table salt over the carpet on top of the sprayed soapy water. Let it all sit for a few minutes to allow all the substances to soak into the carpet.

With a stiff-bristled scrubbing brush, brush the carpet in one direction first, and this will help to collect most of the dirt and make picking it up easier in the next step. After that, you can move on to scrubbing the carpet vigorously so you get into all the nooks and crannies. To absorb any leftover moisture, you should put a towel over the wet area and press it into the carpet.

As soon as the area has been mostly dried, spray the carpet with regular tap water and once again press the towel or cloth down on the floor.

Although this method is perfect for deep cleaning a small area of carpet, deep cleaning your entire carpet by hand this way can be incredibly time consuming. Fortunately there is a better and quicker way to deep clean your entire carpet at home without having to hire a carpet cleaner to do the job for you.

Deep Cleaning Your Carpets With A Vacuum

As an alternative to the previous method of physically washing the whole carpet manually, you could use a hoover and a dry-cleaning solution. This solution to deep cleaning your carpet is significantly easier if cleaning a large area of carpet at one time. For this you will need a vacuum cleaner and some carpet cleaner powder or baking soda along with dish soap and water.

As a first step, vacuum the carpet or the entire area that you wish to clean to remove any dirt that may be on the surface. After this, sprinkle the carpet cleaner powder or baking soda along the area. Then mix dish soap in a bucket of warm water and swish the solution around until you see bubbles appearing.

Using a brush, cloth, sponge, or towel, make sure to gently scrub areas of your carpet with the warm soapy water, using your preferred cleaning tool. No need to soak the floor; simply scrub it enough so the water can penetrate into the carpet fibres without creating puddles.

Now that the carpet has all the cleaning supplies attached you should open any windows or turn on any fans in order to allow it to air dry. Once the carpet is dry, vacuum it again. This will remove all the dirt you brought to the surface along with any remnants of baking soda or cleaning powder.

Time To Replace Your Flooring?

There’s only so much a deep clean can do. If you’re suddenly learning about this 10 years into owning a carpet then it might be best to have a fresh start and replace your old flooring. 10 years is the usual full lifespan of carpet flooring, so there’s no shame in putting new carpets in your home.
