Planting Trees? As a flooring company? You might think we’re mental, and we just might be, but since the start of 2024 we’ve been thanking our 5-star reviewers by planting a tree in their honour as part of our efforts to combat CO2. It’s an effort that started within the company in 2023 as we started to expand quicker than ever. There’s a lot we’re doing internally as a company, and the trees are one project we’ve made public.
But less about us, more about the trees – we’re planting mangroves in Mozambique, and this is why:
Mozambique, situated on the eastern coast of Africa, boasts a 2,500-kilometer-long Indian Ocean coastline facing Madagascar. The country is home to approximately 31 million people, with around 68% residing in vast rural areas. The population is predominantly young, with about 66% of Mozambicans under the age of 24.
Historically, Mozambique has been rich in mangrove estuaries and forests. However, these vital ecosystems have been largely decimated due to intensive tree-cutting for firewood and charcoal. This deforestation has not only affected biodiversity but also undermined the natural protection mangroves provide against coastal erosion and extreme weather events.
In recent years, Northern Mozambique has faced ongoing extremist threats, causing significant displacement among local populations. This conflict has compounded existing development challenges, including limited access to education and healthcare. The instability and lack of resources have pushed many to rely on subsistence agriculture, further contributing to environmental degradation as forests are cleared for farming and fuel.
To address these challenges, efforts are being made to restore Mozambique’s mangrove forests, which are crucial for both environmental stability and the well-being of local communities. Mangrove restoration projects not only aim to rejuvenate the landscape but also provide sustainable livelihoods and strengthen community resilience against the impacts of climate change and socio-economic instability. Through these initiatives, Mozambique can begin to rebuild its natural resources and create a more sustainable and secure future for its people.
Mangroves are a unique coastal tree species found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. They are particularly adept at absorbing carbon and storing it in their extensive underground root systems. This stored carbon, known as blue carbon, plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Beyond their exceptional carbon sequestration abilities, mangroves also offer significant protection to coastal areas. Their complex root systems stabilize shorelines, reducing erosion and buffering against the impact of waves, floods, and storms. This natural defence not only preserves the coastline but also protects the communities and ecosystems that depend on these vital habitats. Mangroves are indispensable for maintaining the health of our planet’s coastal regions and supporting both environmental and human well-being.
Planting Partner
As a flooring company, we don’t have the connections to be able to just plant mangroves wherever we like. We’re working with Ecologi, who’ve teamed up with Eden Reforestation Projects (Eden). They hire local people and teach them how to grow, plants and guard to maturity the trees planted there. So along with environmental progress, they help positively impact the socioeconomic climate of the area too.
What We’ve Planted So Far
We’ve planted 29 Avicennia marina, commonly known as the Grey Mangrove. These mangroves can grow up to 14m tall but their huge root system also contributes to how much CO2 they can capture. They’re great for coastal defence because their large roots help to solidify the ground and they’re pros at dealing with high winds and plenty of tide making them perfect for this project!
We’ve also planted 29 Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, commonly known as the Oriental Mangrove. These mangroves can grow up to a whopping 35m tall and is usually found closer to seas than rivers. The salt water helps their adventitious roots grow. They drop fruits, and because these mangroves love a muddy environment it means when the fruit drops it lands face up in the mud and quickly begins spready roots and taking hold of the land. As a rapidly spreading land defence, these mangroves are an amazing choice!
As well as mangroves, we’re also growing trees further inland. We’ve planted 21 Strychnos spinosa trees in a reforestation project. These trees can help treat snakebites, venereal disease, enhance strength and can even increase the flow of breastmilk in new mothers! They drop fruits, the seeds of which are said to be toxic but the surroundings of the seeds are fleshy and delicious. They’re loved by local communities but maybe more so by animal life – monkeys, bushpigs, impala and elephants in particular love these fruits.
At Easipay Carpets, we believe in giving back to the planet. For every 5-star review we receive, we plant a tree through our partnership with Ecologi. Together, we can contribute to vital reforestation efforts, restore ecosystems, and support local communities. Your positive feedback not only reflects our commitment to quality but also helps us make a tangible impact on the environment.
Thank you for helping us grow a greener future.
