How To Deep Clean Your Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring has been around for almost 100 years at this point, and it continues to get better in both its resistance and its accuracy to other textures, such as wood and stone. It’s hailed for its durability, its waterproof features and its low cost. Let’s dig into some of the things that make vinyl flooring an amazing choice for your home, before we explain when and how you should deep clean your vinyl flooring.

Vinyl Flooring Has Many Benefits

Resistance and Durability

Vinyl has a firm surface, which is very resistant, waterproof, stain proof and very budget friendly. Its firm surface means that when dust, dirt or pet hair fall on it, a quick vacuum will remove it. You can also sweep up with vinyl, although the vacuum is probably a better bet for these.

Added Warmth

Its foamy base layer gives Vinyl Flooring insulating properties, making it warmer than laminate flooring but colder than carpet. It also has some sound dampening properties because of this foamy layer too! This makes it ideal for rooms such as the bathroom where you’ll be stepping out of a warm bath or shower – you want the floor to be comfortable underfoot!

Easy Cleaned

Vinyl can be wiped down or deep cleaned with bleach and other cleaning chemicals to eliminate germs and bacteria. It makes drying this floor super easy too!

Liquid Resistance

The waterproof properties mean you could quite literally throw a bucket of cleaning solution at the floor and then just wipe it up and it’ll handle the intense liquid absolutely fine, where carpet would be ruined and laminate would have a hard time, possibly swelling and needing to be replaced.

How To Deep Clean Your Vinyl Flooring

Sometimes you’ll need to go a little bit further than simply wiping up the mess and spraying some Flash into a mop and bucket. How often you deep clean a vinyl floor depends on how much foot traffic comes through the house and how much dirt and grime they’ll bring along with them. At a minimum, do it twice a year to keep your vinyl flooring looking new.

Firstly you’ll need to gather your supplies. You’ll need:

  • A vacuum
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Baking soda
  • Rage
  • Either vinyl floor cleaner, apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • A bucket
  • And a microfiber cloth

Start with prepping.

Vacuum or sweep your floors to pick up that surface dust. Make sure if you’re vacuuming that you choose a setting for hard surfaces.

Buff out any scuff marks from the vacuum. You can just dampen one of the microfiber cloths and buff them out.

Pre-treat those tough spots. Near skirting boards and kickboards under kitchen counters are typically where you find harder to remove patches. Give it a scrub with some water and a brush, or if that fails use some baking soda and turn that into a paste, let that try to lift the grime a bit before your second attempt.

Move on to a damp mop.

Either use the vinyl floor cleaner, or mix vinegar into the bucket alongside water and add a few drops of dish soap to some extra cleaning power. Mop the floor to give it a more thorough clean than the vacuum can achieve. Rinse and wring the mop out often to make sure the floor is left clean.

Dry the floor.

Use the microfibre cloths to do this – they’ll dry and wring out much easier than a regular cloth will and you’ll appreciate this more when you’re working on a larger space.

And that’s all that goes into a deep clean for vinyl flooring. It’s not as labour intensive as a carpet deep clean. All it is, is a thorough wet clean. This will keep your vinyl flooring looking excellent for years to come.
